Benoit and Lorraine met at Heathrow Airport in
August 1990, where Benoit flew in from Canada specifically to
have a tryout with Lorraine. Both had had very successful careers
as amateurs, being both amateur champions of their respective
country, and Lorraine having also won all the major titles that
same year. They both had recently split up from their respective
partnership but were hungry for more; and it was in the professional
field that they wanted to make their mark.
It didn't take long before they made their mark, for only
a few months after getting together they found themselves on
the floor for their first grand final in the Rising Stars at
the Open British. The following Friday, they were included
in the Semi Final of the Open in three dances, much to their
absolute delight!
That was to be the beginning of a successful professional
career that took them competing, demonstrating, lecturing and
adjudicating in over 30 different countries! The competitive
side of the career brought some amazing moments, notably making
finals in Blackpool, at the Budokan Hall in Tokyo (twice) and
making the final at the European Championship in 1993 representing
England, something they are extremely proud of.
After some
soul searching, there was the announcement in January 1998
that Benoit and Lorraine had decided to both hang up their
competitive shoes. The will to perform was still there however
and in 1999, after first having turned down the project due
to contractual reasons, Benoit & Lorraine decided to join
the acclaimed show “Burn The Floor” and went on touring for
over a year throughout Australia, Europe and America. Not only
was it a very exciting time, performing almost every night
to packed theaters and arenas, it was also a great learning
experience; being the senior Ballroom couple, Benoit & Lorraine
were running most of the Ballroom rehearsals as well as tweaking
choreographies and coaching couples. This wealth of experience
in show has been very useful since.
From the time they left the tour in the year 2000, B & L
started to divide their time between the UK and Canada, having
a home in both countries. More recently, due to the expansion
of work demands in Europe, Benoit and Lorraine have decided
to base themselves solely in the UK, feeling that the central
geographical position of England allows them to take on work
more regularly not only in Europe, but also in Asia, without
still completely giving up their beloved students in North
America! |
